Earlier in 2026, Cathay Pacific airline Captain Mawgan Grace and his colleague Carel Van Vuuren drove his 1957 Hong Kong-registered Land Rover Series 1 “Landy” from the United Kingdom to Cape Town in just 56 days.

In this talk, Mawgan tells how the extraordinary journey covered an amazing 16,707 km.  The team went via the difficult western route though Africa, and travelled through 18 countries on the way.  With their trusty Land Rover, they crossed no fewer than 23 international borders - and drove over mountains, deserts and jungles, and even through current and former war zones.

The aim of the overland expedition was to go back in time, recreating epic overland adventures of old driving down the challenging west coast of Africa, raising money and awareness for conservation in Africa through Tusk.org.  With around 80% of illegal African wildlife products trafficked through Hong Kong, Mawgan raised vital awareness through mainstream media, social media and through talks especially to future generations in schools.

Mawgan Grace is from the United Kingdom and was educated at Shiplake College and Cardiff University.  He is a current Captain with Cathay Pacific Airways, having lived in Hong Kong for 20 years. He’s a passionate sailor and adventurer, has his own sailing yacht and runs Yachtmaster Marine Ltd.  He has recently climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro, run the gruelling Safaricom marathon in Lewa Kenya and participated twice in the famous Elephant Charge 4x4 race held in Zambia raising money for African wildlife conservation.  He also supports 55 schools in the Lower Zambezi Game Management area through used computer equipment from Harrow International school.

Members of the RGS, their guests and others are most welcome to attend this event, which is HK$200 for RGS Members and HK$250 for guests and others.  This talk is free of charge for student members.
