The Royal Geographical Society is pleased to welcome Rory Mackay to lead a field trip to discover some of the most spectacular views that the hilltops of Sai Kung have to offer.

The route of the guided hike, which includes some parts of the Maclehose Trail, leads from Ma On Shan Tsuen, over Ngong Ping to Sai Kung Town.  The first section of trail departs from a peaceful village into secluded forests, before following a small mountain stream upwards.  Along the way, there is an abundance of local wildlife including various small insects, mammals, reptiles and birds.

There is steady but gentle climb and before long the landscape opens up to a highlight of the trip at Ngong Ping.  A grassy plateau awaits with ample open space to enjoy a packed lunch, with a ridgeline offering a beautiful view of the surrounding area of Sai Kung.  For those who are more energetic there is an optional hike up Pyramid Hill with even greater views, about 20 minutes up, directly above the Ngong Ping lunch location.

Rory Mackay stops at various spots to highlight and explain local points of interest to attendees.

For a reasonably fit person, the hike is moderate though there are some steeper descending parts later on as the route nears Sai Kung Town.  Once in Sai Kung town there is the opportunity to wonder around and enjoy the surroundings before joining the coach to Central.

Rory Mackay was born in Hong Kong and grew up between here and Scotland, and has been a Sai Kung native since the age of 3.  He holds a degree in architecture.  He has spent time working and skiing in New Zealand and has also lived in Australia.  He began his adventure career sailing an 80ft yacht from Scotland to the Svalbard archipelago near the North Pole.

Rory has completed a solo bicycle trip across Vietnam and China, cycling from Saigon to Hong Kong.  In addition, he has cycled across Africa, completing the solo ride from Cape Town to Cairo within 6 months, and climbed of some high altitude routes in the Himalayas and Andes.  He now runs an adventure tour company called Wild Hong Kong.
