In the lecture, Mr Englander demystifies the science of rising seas and provides insight into the “new normal” of shifting shorelines. He looks beyond the headlines and official studies, to show why sea levels could rise faster and sooner than most expect. Using the latest science and anecdotes from his experiences in the Arctic, Greenland and Antarctica, he explains the big picture of the coming impact on populations, finance, businesses, communities and societies, illustrated with powerful images.
Mr Englander also puts sea level in the geological context showing how it has moved up and down hundreds of feet in regular cycles in accord with ice ages. Now the globe has broken out of that pattern, with possible serious implications for centuries to come, he discusses whether there is likely to be a crisis. He also discusses if there are likely to be opportunities for those that can see the larger trend.
