We are delighted to welcome Dr Chiu Hon Chim to lead a fascinating field trip to the largest island in the Kiu Tsui Country Park located in Sai Kung. Sharp Island is well known for its volcanic legacy, an ideal spot to visit the island’s collapsed volcano and the affectionally named ‘Pineapple Bun’ rocks, which are ancient boulders filled with cracks.

The island is spoilt with beautiful sandy beaches and a tidal causeway reminiscent of Mont Saint-Michel in France where we have carefully timed our visit so we can walk along its rocky tidal path during low tide before it disappears into the sea.

As well as Sharp Island, the trip also visits Port Shelter and Rocky Harbour, home to spectacular hexagonal columns, which is the biggest attraction of the HK UNESCO Geopark and akin to those of the Giant’s Causeway in Northern Ireland.  In addition, the boat sails past Jin Island, Bluff Island, Basalt Island and Town Island where various spectacular costal features can be seen.

Dr Chiu Hon Chim is a lecturer at the Department of Geography in Hong Kong Baptist University.  He obtained his PhD in the Department of Earth Sciences in HKU working on lake system evolution in Tibet.  His research work is focused on sedimentology and geomorphology.
