The RGS is pleased to arrange another visit to the Centre for Refugees in Tsim Sha Tsui to provide an opportunity for our members to engage and understand the situation of refugees in Hong Kong.

This Centre was established in 2004 and is managed by Christian Action.  It was the first and only community centre for refugees and asylum seekers in Hong Kong.  Each month, it provides 600 vulnerable families and individual with hot meals, clothing, shelter and other basic necessities.  It also helps adults to learn new skills, with school sponsorship, providing case workers and legal assistance.

Often these members of society are overlooked and pushed away, so the core priority of the Centre is to replace this situation with food allowances, acceptance, tolerance and empathy.

The visit begins with a guide around the surrounding area and a glimpse into a refugee’s daily life. This includes the amenities that are commonly used:

* A church
* A mosque
* The office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees
* A home visit – a chance to meet and visit the home of a refugee family

We are guided by a case worker who provides a first-hand understanding of who the refugees are, why they flee from their homes and the issues they face in Hong Kong and globally.

After seeing the neighborhood, we visit the Centre for Refugees in Chungking Mansions and are guided around their facilities. A homemade lunch made by volunteers is then served.
