A Boat Tour of Victoria Harbour “Victoria Harbour: Present and Future”

Nicholas Brooke, SBS, JP Chairman of the Hong Kong Harbourfront Commission
Saturday, 21 Oct 2017
1 pm to 6 pm
The Royal Geographical Society is delighted to be organising a Boat Tour of Victoria Harbour entitled “Victoria Harbour: Present and Future” led by Nicholas Brooke, SBS, JP, Chairman of the Hong Kong Harbourfront Commission.

Victoria Harbour is Hong Kong’s most famous sight and prime natural asset.  The harbour has played a key role in foundation and the growth of the city, leading to a general appreciation of the need to build a waterfront which reflects Hong Kong’s status as an international city with strong maritime links.

The RGS boat is going to embark to Victoria Harbour from Central and travel east with commentary from Mr Brooke on the fascinating areas of Central, Wanchai, Causeway Bay, North Point, Quarry Bay and Shaukiwan before crossing the Harbour to Lei Yue Mun.  The boat is then to travel west past Yau Tong, Cha Kwo Ling and on to Kwun Tong Typhoon Shelter, around Kai Tak, before visiting the new Cruise Ship Terminal.  The boat then continues west to Tsim Sha Tsui, Yau Ma Tai and West Kowloon before crossing the harbour and going east again to Central via Kennedy Town and Western.

During the boat tour, Mr Brooke accompanied by representatives of the Harbour Unit will introduce Members first hand to the areas of the harbour being visited, plus discuss proposals for the future.  The tour allows Members to see the harbour in detail from the water.  It also reveals what has been achieved so far and where further improvements might be effected to provide an attractive, vibrant, functional, accessible and sustainable community asset.  The Harbourfront Commission is of the view that  there is the need for the formation of a Harbourfront Authority, which would have statutory powers and take responsibility for the delivery of outcomes on the waterfront going forward.

Nicholas Brooke, SBS, JP is Chairman of the Hong Kong Harbourfront Commission, a Past President of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors, former Chairman of Hong Kong Science & Technology Parks Corporation and a former member of the Hong Kong Housing Authority and the Hong Kong Town Planning Board.
